We are thrilled to share some wonderful news! Dr. Sue (Mrs. Kruske) is a long-time friend and volunteer at our school, and she has written a story dedicated to our students. Last Friday, she visited us to read an excerpt, and we feel incredibly fortunate to have such a supportive and dedicated community. Enjoy this heartfelt message from her:

“When my daughters attended this school, I loved volunteering with the children in their classrooms. As I approached retirement, I hoped to volunteer again, and Mrs. Jentges graciously made that possible. I started visiting the second-grade classroom weekly during reading and writing, helping wherever I could. The children’s energy and enthusiasm were infectious, making it a highlight of my week. We read stories, wrote poetry, letters, and eventually, chapter stories. Animals were a common theme, and as a retired veterinarian, I often helped with the animal stories. One day, a second-grade boy asked why I didn’t write a story too. The truth was… I had a story to share.

Niles is my real pet, adopted from a shelter by my daughter, and things didn’t go as planned. Much of the book is based on true events. However, with over 30 years as a veterinarian, I recognized that many people who adopt from shelters are unaware of how to transform a “stray animal” into a loving and healthy pet. Many underestimate the kindness and dedication of those who rescue animals in need, and that story also needed to be told. Thus, “Niles the Cat: A Rescue Story” was born.

The tale begins with a fictional account of Niles, his mother, and sister being brought into the shelter as strays, meeting other animals in similar situations, receiving care from the staff, and eventually being thoughtfully adopted. Once Sarah adopts Niles in the story, everything turns true and ends happily. I hope you enjoy the story.”

Sincerely, Dr. Sue (Mrs. Kruske to the kids).
